Abstract

The present research investigates a humidification-dehumidification desalination (HDH) system that includes a simple bubble column dehumidifier. The studies are carried out under a variety of operating settings, such as saltwater temperature (50 oC-70 oC), saltwater flow rate (50×10-3-120×10-3 kg/s), bubble column sparger hole sizes (0.7 mm-1 mm), and chilled water level (3.5 cm-4.5 cm). The results indicate that the maximum productivity is 0.209 kg/h and the average specific energy consumption is 18.2 kWh/l. At 4 cm chilled water level and 70°C saltwater temperature, the average GOR is 16.8% and 4.7% higher than at 3.5 cm and 4.5 cm, respectively. The average dehumidifier effectiveness is 77.17% at 4.5 cm of water. This system can yield Fresh water costs 1.5 LE per kg, yielding a profit of 12.93 LE and a two-year payback period. Productivity, GOR, and SEC correlations all show ±20% deviation.
